Eco-conscious consumers are now paying attention not only to eco-friendly cultivation and production methods but also to carbon footprints of products. For example in wine industry, cultivation and production methods and especially transportation all contribute to the carbon footprint of wine. A bag-in-box is an eco-friendlier packaging than e.g. glass packaging. In a bag-in-box, wine amounts to approximately 96% of the total weight of the product whereas in a glass bottle the percentage is around 60%.
Most of the environmental effects of the packaging are due to the production process. The environmental effect naturally depends on the amount of materials and energy used for producing the packaging: the smaller the amount, the smaller the effect. The carbon footprint of a bag-in-box is 55% smaller. It also produces 85% less domestic waste than a glass bottle.
